GDC 09 Annoucing the Nintendo Wii SD Channel

March 25th, 2009 by carmen · No Comments

Today at Nintendo’s GDC Keynote, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, announced the storage solution long promised by Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aimé. The SD Channel offers gamers a place to store their growing Virtual Console and WiiWare games via SD cards. Yeah I know, it’s not a hard drive but it’s a decent solution and simple to use too.

Here’s how it works:

Downloads can be saved directly to SD cards (high capacity and memory) and then games are selected and launched from the SD Channel (located as a small SD icon at the bottom of the regular Wii menu). Not bad at all, right? One thing to note though, this process does require some of the Wii’s internal memory so it might make sense to move the majority of your downloaded games onto an SD card.

The update is available now. If your Wii is connected to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, it should be glowing, if not check your Wii mail.

SD cards are not too pricey these days, so this was probably the most economical solution to the Wii’s storage problem. Check Amazon.com for the best prices.
