Joystiq, Engadget and several other blogs are reporting news of an updated Wiimote strap that uses a locking clasp to tighten around the wrist. Nintendo hasn’t made any announcements, but recent Wii buyers have found the new straps upon opening their Wii’s. Could it be possible that the Wii shortage is because Nintendo is replacing the straps on all Wiimotes?

Amendment: Nintendo World Report is actually calling this the 4th version of the Wii Strap: “this new model would be the fourth incarnation of the strap; the first was the original model which tended to break, the second would be the replacement straps with the thicker connector to the remote, and the third was the replacement of the replacement that lacked the Nintendo and Wii branding.”
